[net.games.rogue] Faint with hunger

csgt (09/14/82)

I need some help. In 8 of the last 10 games I died either of starvation
or got beatup when fainting, from levels 14 to 18. I do not think
I am doing anything wrong but I am not a rogue-guru.

Do you get hungry quicker if:
1) You run (shift moves), if you find (f<dir>)?
2) You carry lots of items around? If so, does it matter what types?
(armor weighs more than scrolls, hence might make you hungry quicker)
3) You wait until you are faint before eating?
4) Being in battles?
5) Restoring Hit Points?
6) Carry gold around? (leave it for the (hopefully!) return trip)
7) Drink beer while playing?

I am running on version 5.2. Can anyone help out there in Rogue Land?
Please respond to me and if enough people want to know the results I will
post them on the net.

Thanks in advance

Wearing any rings will make you consume food much quick, except of
course the ring of slow digestion.

You do not get hungry faster from any of the previous list, except
possibly drinking beer while playing. Each turn you take uses up
one unit of food. Running across a room takes one turn per space.

In order to not get hungry as often, one important thing is to search
rooms efficiently. The more you bounce off the walls of the room,
the more food you eat. Searching diagonally tends to cover more ground
in the same amount of time. Of course, resting and searching also
take up turns, so you can't afford to do too much resting and searching
if you're starving.

Wearing most rings causes food to be consumed faster, so you get
hungry faster. Some rings eat more than others. Slow indigestion
reduces your food consumption rate by 1/2 of the normal rate.

Rogue was tuned for a 24x80 screen. If you have a bigger screen you
have to explore more area and tend to get hungry faster. If you have
a smaller screen you don't get hungry as often, but other problems
arise. (Your inventories can become unreadable, and you don't have
as much manuvering room.) Later versions of rogue try to compensate
for screen size, and won't go above a certain size.

In rogue version 3.7 all rings DO NOT make you consume food much quicker.
Only the rings of Regenaration, Sustain strength, and Search makes you consumefood at an increased rate.
