In response to your message of Thu Sep 16 11:55:37 1982: I am not convinced that any monster (trolls or anything else) have any regenerative abilities in any version of Rogue; after all, the mapping from any D&D to Rogue is far from exact. I have found the [(bash and run away) *n] an effective tactic for dealing with everything except U's which got the drop on me with their gaze and with dragons (if they can't make contact, they flame). I also doubt that any monster in Rogue is absolutely invulnerable; it's just that trolls and hobgoblins can take more than half of your hit points at one blow (given your probable # of hp at the level where they first appear).
