[net.games.rogue] aggressive floating eye

kevin (09/18/82)

Something rather unusual happened during a recent game--on level 3 I walked
into a room with several monsters, two of which were E's. While I was still
standing in the doorway, one of the E's immediately moved towards me! I
always thought that E's were inactive until provoked. But the story doesn'T
end there...After killing the floating eye, I walked into the room and walked
right by the other E, which wasn't moving. I didn't attack it, but it did
transfix me as I walked by! I ended up getting killed by a bat (!). Has
anyone else had a similar experience, or is this just a strange bug?

You ran into a TREASURE ROOM! Congratulations. The first rule of
a treasure room is - ALL monsters are aggressive.

Not ALL monsters. Very often I find that in treasure rooms there is one or
two monsters that just sit there sleeping until I walk over and kill them.
Also, when I run away, a bunch of monsters will chase me, but after(if) I
dispatch them, the rest of the monsters just sort of trickle out to get
me. I've found the best strategy is to run away, turning around every so
often to wack the monster immediately behind me, kill all the monsters chasing
me, and find a room (preferably lighted) to wait and regenerate, while
throwing arrows at straggling monsters as they come out of the doorway. Then
when I'm back to full strength, go back to the treasure room, kill any
remaining monsters and get the treasure.

What ever you do, treat E's with respect. They are extreamly dangerous
critters. Try to kill them from a distance, and if they get next to you,
kill them immediately, even if you have to use magic. They usually die]with the first blow, but if they don't they can kill you with one glance.
