What can make you lose gold? I know leprechauns can steal it, but I've lost gold other times too. Is there cursed gold? One time I picked up some gold, got no message, but my gold count had decreased. I just finished a games where I was doing fine, had 2100+ gold, then got done in by a troll and finished with 1900 only.

You lose 10% of your gold as a penalty for dying! That explains why your purse of 2100+ was reduced to 1900 when you were done in by a troll. Jishnu hocsd!jis

I know nothing of the negative gold encountered by some of you, but when you are killed, you automatically lose 10% of your gold. So it's a good idea to quit if you have less than 10 h.p. and are being attacked, down on those deeper levels.

There is a death tax of approximately 10% and your epithaph reflects your winnings after taxes. It seems as though bravery, honour and fighting to the death are not rewarded in these modern pushbutton world. You get to keep all your gold only if you run away and quit.
