One way to determine magical properties of armor and weapons is to use
the detect magic potion. Drop the items in question about you and
quaff the potion; any magical items will show up as dollar signs.
Of course you don't know if they are blessed or cursed but at least
you  know if they might be cursed. Also, magical items have a 10%
better chance of being cursed than blessed.
