Where I play at, those Purple Worms are mean, and would be too much for you. I'd quaff the haste-self and run. If you feel adventurious you could quaff the potion (and take a hit) then: hit the P, take a step away, hit the P, take a step away, ... If you are hitting him, then you may want to keep doing it. If you miss the first couple of times, you may wish to RUN and hope you bump into exit and NO other monsters! Be careful, though, the potion won't last for a long time (I think it lasts about 4 turns only!)! Mike System Roguer ucbvax!sdcsvax!laman

First, look at your map if it's complete. Try to establish a runaway route with many alternates from every spot. Now turn on it. Don't worry about self-haste, you shouldn't need it if you play it right. Hit it a few times. With level 10, str. 18, and +2 to hit, you should be able to hit it atleast twice. If you go below 30 h.p., start running. Fortunately, over level 8 you can regenerate almost with every step. Just try not to get backed into a corner.

I've found the problem with running in loops from any monster - trolls, xorns, purple worms or whatever - is that sooner or later (usually sooner) you run into something else and are sandwiched. Barring a teleportation or scare monster, that's CERTAIN death.
