A new version of GNU Chess is available. To get it, connect to Internet host venera.isi.edu (10.1.0.52, 128.9.0.32) during off-hours (This is a pacific timezone machine). Ftp via anonymous ftp and gobble /usr/ftp/pub/gnuchess.tar.Z, a compressed tar file of 363,081 bytes. Use binary mode and enable hash-marks with your ftp to see the progress of the transfer. Once you've got it, do "uncompress gnuchess.tar; tar xf gnuchess.tar; make" New in this version: * some extensions to the opening book to accomodate players who enjoy the Vienna Game. I have problems getting gnuchess to work under xchess, which is included in the gnuchess distribution (this refers to the most recent distribution as recently announced by Stuart Cracraft). After installing gnuchess, gnuchessr, and xchess virtually unchanged on my Sun 3/50 with X11R3 and typing xchess -c [-p gnuchessr] a window with a chessboard pops up and all chess pieces but the white King's rook are painted, but then the program hangs. xchess -c -p /usr/games/chess works, and just using gnuchessr directly indicate that gnuchessr has the same (character) interface as /usr/games/chess, which is somewhat puzzling. Has anybody else observed this problem who would be willing to post/email the fix? With thanks in advance, Fritz Henglein (henglein@nyu.edu)
