[net.games.rogue] Warn me when something idiotic"s happening

mark (10/19/82)

Or better yet (and very easy to do) change the hit message to
	Your mace hits the snake
instead of
	You hit the snake
with the obvious special cases ("Your bare hands hit the snake",
"Your mace misses the snake", etc.) You could even get fancy:
"Your mace barely misses the snake". You would have to be
careful with numbers, to avoid "Your mace hit" in terse mode.

kpk (10/19/82)

Sorry, Tim but I disagree. I've made a similar mistake several time but
I would rather not get that message for the 95% of the times I'm weilding
the correct weapon. Perhaps you ought to be more careful,
the computer would not be a chalenge if it were foolproof.

bsw (10/20/82)

Also, how about making a command that'll stop people from tossing
arrows about without bows, quarrels without crossbows, etc. This would
be more realistic if nothing else. You might not want to do this for
rocks, though( I can see people tossing rocks about without a sling).

sjb (10/21/82)

Don't impede throwing things without wielding the 'proper'
weapon (e.g. arrow with bows, etc.) I often throw plain
arrow at floating eyes. It usually only takes one to kill
them, so why bother to wield the bow and then back to
whatever you had before afterwards?

dave (10/21/82)

Not only does wielding bows waste time, I've found that throwing
arrows while wielding a mace is just about as effective as throwing
them while wieling a bow.

wapd (10/21/82)

When you are attacking (and being slaughtered by) a beastie,
it is entirely possible (in the "real" world) that you would panic
and hit it with a bow or something equally stupid. Typing the
wrong key or forgetting to wield the right weapon is a form of panic.

How about a display that warns you when the player has an IQ of less than
100?

will (10/23/82)

I agree completely. All to many times I have foolishly attempted
to beat centaurs, yetis, and other such meanies to death with my
bow. Could we maybe have a 'weilding: %s' at the bottom?

jj (10/23/82)

I swore that I would not enter this conversation.
I don't believe that a non-panic'ed individual would even consider
using a bow, or a potion, to beat a monster dead with. Perhaps the
solution is to steal anothe line from the bottom and put the weapon,
armour type (not class) and such on that line. While a confused person
might indeed use the wrong weapon, a healthy one would just simply not
rush to the attack waving a bow wildly in the air.
Flame off.

ARPAVAX:leres (10/24/82)

Once I got killed because I was weilding a bow; however, I \learned/
from the experence and have been more careful since. While it is true
that it is no fun to get killed becuase you forgot to change back to
your "good" weapon, it's also no fun to get killed for any other silly
reason. I wish you amatuers would stop crying because you lack the skill
necessary to play the game of rogue. Would it still be a good game if
it wasn't difficult to win?

net.games.rogue, nor ANY newsgroup for that matter, is NOT
the place to publish what was meant as a private communication
via mail (however private mail can get!) when the recipient
or the sender is not pleased. Let's try to be a bit more
civilized, eh?

mat (10/29/82)

To the uncouth person who imposed a paragraph of personal and unprofessional
insults on this newsgroup --
Please do not do this in the future. If you want to do it on net.jokes
or net.singles, fine, but this group is for important business!
