[gnu.chess] Gnuchess Version 1.55

ktw@att.att.com (01/03/90)

Saw Cracraft's posting to gnu.chess about the new version.
Do I get the tar file from you? According to the posting the
full address is

	prep.ai.mit.edu:u/emacs/gnuchess-1.55.tar.Z

Any help will be appreciated.

I didn't intend for this note to be posted to the net. However,
this is a useful place to follow-up with the info that the files
arrived for 1.55. For those that might be interested, this is an
edited version of the note I set Stuart Cracraft (from whom the
sources came) about the modifications I needed to make:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Much easier to compile than the previous version! I got it up and
running less that 15 minutes after editing out all the mailer lines!
I note the "types.h" line is now inserted before "times.h"--that was
one of the major bombs in the version I had.

The only modifications I had to make (and they were reasonably easy)
were definitions of W_OK in the nondsp.c and uxdsp.c files, and of
SIGINT and SIGOUT in nondsp.c. This was done by inserting "int W_OK;"
around line 48, right after the "int mycnt1,mycnt2;"; and, in nondps.c,
adding "int SIGINT;" and "int SIGOUT;" after the W_OK definition.

You've just saved me having to buy a Fidelity Display 2100!

Well, my old Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 overpowered GNU in the
5-minute game (the Challenger 7 took about 35 minutes; GNU only took
5). I figure this might be a fair comparison since GNU is running a
32-bit processor while Challenger 7 is a Z-80.

Fidelity's endgame was so weak it overplayed by 15+ moves when mate
was immenent, acquiring material. I finished the game for it.

Installation was trivial; congratulations on a fine piece of software.

One problem I'm having is getting from the help page back to the game
page. Maybe this is a bug, or maybe it's a user interface problem,
but normally I expect to see the help, and then expect a single
keypress to return me to the game.

I haven't yet figured out how to get back to the game.

Well, the bug is that the line saying 'Hit <esc> to return' is
gone is version 1.55. It still works like 1.53 though.
