[gnu.chess] More on bug in CHESS V1.55

bbs00085@uafcseg.uucp (Dave Kormann) (02/13/90)

I realize my previous post on this subject was woefully incomplete, so
i'm offerring this more detailed description of the problem.

background
-
running VMS V5.1, GCC V1.36
I'm attempting to port CHESS to VMS in some kind of elegant fashion (ie
use of high end VT terminals with downloaded fonts, little VMS niceties,
etc.) Unfortunately, there seems to be a serious bug in the CHESS code.
The bug manifests itself when either player (i think) is near to mating.
I didn't research it extensively, but the game seems to refuse to let the
player make certain moves. This seems to be an especially serious problem
with regards to movement of the rook. If the player makes the 'hint move',
the game will checkmate him, even though the player is not in check!
I can provide more information about this via EMail. my only access to
NetNews is via a bbs account at UAFCSEG, so I'd appreciate it if people would
respond to this via EMail.

thanks, and i apologize if this has been discussed before.
