Anyone offer what caused this to happen to a *posting* of mine? Why would a site bounce this rather than drop it? Is this likely to re-occur regularly? (PS: Note the "Path:" line - Brampton to Edmonton via Texas, Ohio, Virginia and Montreal ... is this what NNTP's all about?) ******* Bounce message follows ********* >From relay.CDNnet.CA!ean Sun Dec 3 01:15:30 1989 remote from utgpu Received: by telly.on.ca (smail2.5 id AA09331) 3 Dec 89 01:15:30 EST (Sun) Received: from relay.CDNnet.CA by gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca with SMTP id 63950; Sat, 2 Dec 89 19:52:40 EST Received: by relay.CDNnet.CA (5.59/1.14) id AA24310; Sat, 2 Dec 89 16:52:21 PST Date: Sat, 2 Dec 89 19:52:21 EST Message-Id: <8912030052.AA24310@relay.CDNnet.CA> To: evan@telly.on.ca From: mailer-daemon@relay.CDNnet.CA Subject: failed mail Status: RO Your message was not delivered. >Anyone offer what caused this to happen to a *posting* of mine? >Why would a site bounce this rather than drop it? The U of Alberta provides a limited news feed to the Alberta Research Council via a CDNnet mail link. The CDNnet route from alberta appears to pas through UBC on its way to the ARC. The ean gateways at UBC have been known to get plugged up on occasion, thus the "bounce" message. >Is this likely to re-occur regularly? No, since the U of Alberta and the ARC will be speaking IP over a 56K line to each other within the next two weeks. >(PS: Note the "Path:" line - Brampton to Edmonton via Texas, Ohio, Virginia >and Montreal ... is this what NNTP's all about?) A significant portion of the network world has yet to meet the concept of a newsgroup (including large chunks of the Internet). This is why there are bi-directional news-mailing lists gateways. EAN redistributes several mailing lists, but I would guess this is Alberta trying to feed Alberta Research Council articles by mail, and for some reason they elect to go through the EAN relay in Vancouver (by default EAN sites are configured to talk to each other through Vancouver :-) >(PS: Note the "Path:" line - Brampton to Edmonton via Texas, Ohio, Virginia >and Montreal ... is this what NNTP's all about?) The utgpu-jarvis-texas-ohio-uunet links are all normal NNTP links. uunet, cs.utexas.edu and tut.cis.ohio-state.edu are all in the top 5 sites in the US, so there is nothing too surprising there. cs.utexas.edu is one of the feeds for jarvis.csri (NNTP does foster more intercontinental links, yes, but there was never much method to the madness anyway). It is a tad surprising that Alberta would get the article faster through Montreal and Athabasca U. than from UBC (which is an NNTP site), but weirder things have happened before.
