When an article is marked as unread (i.e. it had a 'D' in front of it and I press 'u' to un-mark it) it still behaves as though it has been read (e.g. 'p' and 'n' won't find it as an unread article). This behavior is different from the previous version of gnus.

This behavior is different from the previous version of gnus. The command, mark an article as unread, is intended to keep in mind that the article is read once, but it must be read someday again. I often use this feature, and I'm usually interested in NEW news, but not old news (marked as read). This is why articles marked as unread are skipped over by `n' and `p'. The next version of GNUS, however, will have commands, `M-u' and `M-U', for removing any kinds of marks. These will do what you want.
