[gnu.emacs.gnus] Intro to gnus and NNTP

vail@tegra.UUCP (Johnathan Vail) (07/15/89)

I have some naive questions I hope some one can answer:

What is nntp?

Where can I get it?

What is it used for?

I originally thought that it was a way to remotely read news. The
nntp server would do all the prefrobnicating and such and only ship
to the client the wanted articles. It appears that it does a lot
more. I also thought it was something special but I suspect it might
be what normally moves the news?

I currently use GNU emacs rnews. I would like some of the features of
gnus but I am not sure how to configure it to work. It seems to want
a nntp server or something. I think there is a way to run it directly
on the spool files but I don't know how to make it do so.

I work on a network of Suns, with two central cross mounted servers.

Thanks...
