From: Henry.Kautz It annoys me to no end that my inventory is re-lettered whenever a new item is added or one disappears. Eg, when I run out of arrows, the letter for arrow (say "i") is shifted to the next item (say, a suit of armor) so that the armor is thrown -- rather than getting a message like "out of 'i'". Why should picking up a potion change the way I refer to a dagger? etc etc. SO: LET ITEMS BE ASSIGNED A LETTER WHEN THEY ARE PICKED UP, AND DON'T CHANGE IT. When something is gone, there is simply an empty slot for that letter, which is filled in when something new is picked up. If I'm beating a dead horse that has been disposed of long ago, I'd appreciate a rational reason why the current system is more sensible!
