[gnu.emacs.gnus] problem with gnus

bergman@m2c.m2c.org (Michael Bergman) (09/13/89)

I just added a patch to avoid a problem I was having with emacs
freezing up under X11, and gnus stopped working. When I try to read
gnus with the new version, I get the message:

Connecting to nntp server on <host>

(which is normal) followed by:

	Host "<host> not responding.

which is not. When I run the old version I have no problem with gnus.
The only thing I can think of that could be causing the problem is
that I did not install the new emacs--I just ran "make all" in the src
tree, and am running it from the "xemacs" in .../gnu/emacs/src. Does anyone know if
this is indeed capable of causing this type of problem, and why? I
was planning on just moving the new version into /usr/local/bin, do I
need to run "make install" instead? Do I need to do a "make clean"
first? The only routine changed was xfixscreen().

I noticed that emacs was dumped as "xemacs" and "emacs.18.54.5", and
that the previous 4 times I had compiled it had apparently created
"emacs.18.54.1-4". What is the significance of this? Does it mean
that "emacs.18.54.5" is looking for lib in /usr/local/emacs.18.54.5?

Thanks...
