[gnu.emacs.gnus] Start-up time of GNUS

khai@amara.uucp (S. Khai Mong) (11/08/89)

Apologies for munging up the subject line in my original posting . . .

Now about the slow startup time. I tracked down to the fact that it
had really nothing to do with gnus. It was the server that was taking
forever to initially respond. Then, somebody sent me this over the
mail:

> On a sun without a nameserver, but with nntpd compiled with -lresolv,
> all nntp clients is very slow at upstart.
>
> It has just been discussed on news.software.nntp

So I recompiled my nntpd without -lresolv and now it works quite well
now. It is now as fast as using a local news spool. Perhaps about
five to ten seconds startup time on a Sun3/60 server and client. I
can live with that. Previously, it was taking one or two minutes to
do anything.
