Hi,
I have not gotten very far installing gnus and I am not much of a lisp person
so perhaps you could give me a nudge. When I do make in the gnus directory,
it fails trying to find the "nntp" file. Is this supposed to be a lisp
file or is the nntp directory?
Thanks in advance!

You might find this useful. nntp.el is a lisp file it is looking for.

Thanks to all who helped me get Gnus up and running. Here is what I did:
Caveat: I have only done this with Emacs 18.51 and Gnus 3.10
- byte-compiled all the files in the proper order (can't remember the
exact order)
- added the following lines to my .emacs file
(setq gnus-nntp-service nil)
(setq gnus-nntp-server "unh")
(autoload 'gnus "gnus" "Read network news." t)
(autoload 'gnus-post-news "gnus" "Post a news" t)
(autoload 'nntp "nntp" "NNTP service" t)
- The variables "gnus-nntp-service and "gnus-nntp-server" were the key.
I had set the gnus-nntp-service to nil but had set the server
to ":/usr/spool/mail" thinking it looked there for news. Well,
that doesn't work. When it goes to read the actives file, everything
just hangs.
I have settled on Gnus because I do not have Gnews to try out. I may
get it at some time to try out, but from a recent posting, I hear it is slow.
I am beginning to like Gnus better than vnews with the saving of articles
in files the same name as the group in an automagic fashion . I also like
the previewing of the subjects.
I thank the author of Gnus for the tidbit about the server. Now I
have to get this baby running on my Sun Workstation!!
I can't wait until Gnus 3.11 with the texinfo manual comes out. Doing
a help within Gnus took a looooong time. Once done, I snagged into a
buffer and printed it out.
