Knowing that monsters attempt to take the shortest route towards you can help you in several situations. A previously mentioned strategy allows one to rest, put on rings, etc. Another strategy is seen below: # # ###############@ # T######### # # ################# I have set up situations like the above to avoid confrontations with stronger monsters. Note that the troll will hold his position rather than move around the path. The nice part is that rogue52 allows you to attack him (via throwing weapons or using staffs) while he can do nothing to you. I haven't tested how this works with U's and D's. Has anyone else noted a *similar* case with arrows. That is, I have thrown arrows down a corridor which go through the wall of a room rather than stop at the end of a corridor. ___ @################|( #|. #|. #+. Brad Hemminger (bmh@unc)

#R:unc:-429900:uiucdcs:9500102:000:417 uiucdcs!emrath Nov 25 02:11:00 1982 I tried throwing arrows at an L from within a tunnel thusly: ###@###+.L the arrows never hit or missed, they just landed in the room around near the door. Moving up to just outside the door didn't help any either. Eventually the arrows pile up and start vanishing. From within a tunnel, arrows seldom (if ever?) hit their mark. I presume that throwing things in a tunnel just isn't very effective. (V 5.2)
