[net.games.rogue] Ramblings of a Retiring Rogue:er

govern (12/03/82)

Now that I am a system administrator, I have to maintain rogue instead
of playing it, and I have a few questions/comments to make.

(All these comments apply to version 3.7.1 of rogue (mctesq))

1)	I've tried to use rogue on a small terminal (VT100 in 132-col
14-line mode) and it just hangs; I can't get it to do anything.
Is there a minimum terminal size, or am I doing something wrong?

2)	When you create a nymph, either by Create Monster Scroll or
	polymorph, she's not carrying anything.

3)	When you have no gold, and a Lep hits you, it vanishes without a
grumble. ( Your ^&(&^(%@!! purse was empty! )

4)	What does a Vampire do that rates it so high? Most of the times
I've met them I've either had a magic arrow (rapid kill) or been
confused by Umber Hulks (rapid death, usually from the U.)
I once let a Vamp beat up on me for a while, running my 90+ hit
points down to 10 before I killed it, and it just kept taking 5-10
	points per hit... boring.

5)	Some of my frustrations have been fixed in 5.2 (not that I
have a copy of 5.2) such as identifying traps and listing
	everything you've found.

6)	Starvation doesn't seem to kill you. I once dropped a Scare
Monster, waited about 9999 waits, ocaasionally killing
monsters between fainting spells, and gave up from boredom
	before I could starve.

(Wish List)

7)	I really liked a previous reader's suggestion that * be the
	inventory command instead of i.

8)	THE ^L COMMAND SHOULD BE A VALID COMMAND ANY TIME!!!!!
I'm really tired of getting my screen disrupted while
zapping a wand , choosing a scroll, etc., and not being able
to type ^L to repair things... especially if I can no longer
see the monster I'm trying to zap.

9)	Eating too much food should cause a "belch" or similar
response. After all, many of us tend to have characters of
minimal couth, and might also want to know if it was worth
eating a food instead of dropping it.

10)	It would be nice if the identify scroll would remove itself
from the pack before asking what you want identified. I
	often have the following scenario:

		Read what? d
This is an identify scroll -More-
		Identify what? *
		....
		d) A scroll of identify
		e) A jade ring
		f) A moonstone ring <--- aggravate monster, -1 dex., etc.
		...
		Identify what? e
		A +2 ring of increase damage(jade)
		P
		Put on what?	e

(e is, of course, the ring of aggravate, or stupidity, or whatever.)

If the scroll can't remove itself before the *, maybe it
could remove itself before identifying the item, and print
an item letter along with the item name.

11)	It would be nice if Return were a valid response to the More
prompt. Also, if you type * in response to a "Which One"
question, it would be nice if you could type the letter you
choose as a response to -More-, instead of typing
	<SPACE> <wait while screen redraws> <letter>.

12)	How can I find out the wizard's password? (now that I'm
mostly a guru rather than a player). Wizardry would also
help relieve the "Why should I bother going past Level 26
	Blues"

You can indeed die of starvation (at least in 5.2).

I once encountered a "party room" full of all sorts
of creatures. An eye just happened to be blocking the
entrance to the room and I was quickly (and permanently)
transfixed and left to watch the system play by itself.
It took several minutes (maybe five) but eventually
	I did die of starvation.

I knew I should've saved a hardcopy of the tombstone!
