[net.games.rogue] Advice for beginners

WARNING: This article lists some basic strategies. Some players may
wish to discover these on their own. Most will just flame at me.

5 5
4 4
3 3
2 2
1 1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

1: If you have not found an identify scroll, don't read any scrolls unless
you have something like a ring or wand to identify.

2: Don't drink potions in the presence of moving monsters. It might be
helpful that once, but if it's paralysis you could die. Don't drink
potions when you have less than full HP. It might be healing and you
will want the extra HP(s). DO drink unknown potions when outside of
a new room as a haste self or other might help you fight a monster
inside. Try to keep a healing potion around if you haven't found
    blindness yet. (Healing cures blindness.)

3: Don't put on unknown rings as some are devastating (aggravate monster.)

4: Try to obtain one experience level for each dungeon level down to the 7th
or so. Don't hang around for monsters if you're out of food.

5: When on levels populated by rust monsters, (9-18 (varies with version))
wear your second best armor. If you can make it to level 19 you will
need all the armor you can get.

6: When you find an unknown wand/staff, zap it at a weak monster (OBSKJ..)
to test the effect. Zap from 5 or 6 spaces away. ( ..@.....K...| )
Staffs of drain life are offensive weapons. Use them on monsters that
you can kill with one shot, because your hit points get shot, too!
Leprechauns and Nymphs are very good targets.

7: Save your powerful magic. It's tempting to fire your lightning at every-
thing, but save it. Same for staffs of light. Light up the center room
on dark levels so you can heal there and see monsters coming. The only
other good use is when you are weak or fainting, to quickly look for
    food.

8: When your low on HP and being attacked, run. Try to run in previously
explored regions. When traversing a room, use diagonal movement. It's
faster and the monster will use it too.

I expect some flames about #5. Actually, I'm interested in other's strategies.

Could someone post a list of the levels that the draining monsters (like
R and A) go away. It would really help my play.
