In response to your message of Wed Jan 5 12:08:55 1983: I'm still convinced there is only one scroll of teleportation, since I have run into the situation described, called the scroll teleportation, and later been teleported (not simply moved within the room). Whether or not you are asked to identify the scroll is based on whether your randomly-selected destination is in the same room, in which case the programmers assumed you might be asleep enough not to notice (just as you are asked to identify create-monster scrolls since the monster could have strolled up while you weren't looking). If there were a scroll of transportation, it would probably still do some good, especially if you had run all the way into a dead end.

Are you folks really talking about the same version of Rogue (5.2) that we use here? I've never beem prompted for the name of a teleportation scroll. Once you've read one, it appears as such in your inventory (and D*). --Ardly the Initiate
