[alt.bbs] BBS Software for 3B2

clear@cavebbs.gen.nz (Charlie Lear) (03/05/91)

In December I posted information about the port of KCBBS software that
Conrad Bullock had done from SCO Xenix 386 and Esix to the 3B2/400, and
sought replies from people interested in obtaining a copy.

Since then we have been waiting for certain updates to arrive from the
author of KCBBS, which have now turned up.

The current status of the 3B2 port is this:
 - local messaging works fine and is stable
 - Usenet and Fidonet email works but is a kludge
 - Usenet newsgroups work fine
 - Fidonet echoes are read-only
 - the downloadable files section works but needs work

Improvements we are waiting to port include:
 - a better message and article editor
 - Fidonet write ability
 - Elimination of some non-serious and elusive bugs

My intention is to contact the people who emailed me once the improved
port is available. Alternatively, we can get something underway right
now and pass on updates shortly.

(Actually, if the compiler and kernel isn't all that different for the
3B1, it could possibly be persuaded to work on them too.)

The next question is distribution. It is going to cost me a small fortune
to send the sources via email. Compressing, uuencoding and posting is a
far better method IMO, but where? Here? Comp.sources.3b1 even though its
a 3B2 program? Posting would allow people who missed the original call
for email to get it, and would (hopefully) eliminate the "me too" followups.
(I know c.s.3b1 is moderated, but it would involve only one email trans-
mission instead of eight or ten.)

Personals:
Usama Maraqa: my email to ummaraqa@iastate.edu is bouncing. I
know your need for the software is getting urgent, can you wait another
couple of weeks? Email me again and I'll try a couple more replies.

Robb: Yes, I know you're lurking out there. If you come across a cheap
SCSI for the 400 I'll cross your palm with silver. Say hi to Godzilla
and tell your Dad that everyone who sees his clock wants to take it home.

Ken: Didn't realise your son was in the Marines. Our thoughts are with you
and best wishes for his safe and speedy return home. Hope oneb is bringing
in enough loonies to keep you guys in imported beer... 8-)
