[[NOTE CROSSPOSTING. Please edit the Newsgroups line if you follow-up this article.]] The following is taken from a brochure put out by The Global Technology Foundation. If you want more information, I can send you more text, or an electronic copy of their computer equipment donation form. Other than that, you'd do better to contact them directly. (Although, don't expect a fast response. Happily, they've been swamped with requests for information.) If you have computer equipment you no longer need, you might get more for it as a tax deduction than you would by selling it in the classifieds. The same applies to businesses who often have thousands of dollars of obsolete hardware taking up warehouse space. This material could certainly be put to good use by G.T.F. Disclaimer: I have no connection with Global Technology Foundation. I heard a story about them on NPR and thought that it was a cool (and Politically Correct) thing. ---- ============================ Global Technology Foundation Box 4861 Boulder, Colorado 80306 (303) 440-1115 ============================ Improving the human condition through responsible worldwide sharing of resources and knowledge. ---- The Global Technology Foundation is a non-profit organization formed to promote the responsible and efficient use of technology worldwide. We believe that technology, used responsibly, can help solve some of the basic problems of the world. Our _Technology_Share_Program_ is simple and elegant. Technological equipment that still has value and utility is constantly being made obsolete by new advances in the United States and other developed countries. The Global Technology Foundation will collect and transfer this surplus equipment to a setting where its utility can be realized. In as much as the Program is based on sound economic principle, the creation of added value by redistributing resources, we expect it ultimately to become self supporting. ---- Tax Advantages: The internal Revenue Code, as amended, provides that a donor of material equipment is entitled to a charitable contribution deduction. In certain cases a donor can qualify under Section 170(e)(3) of the Tax Reform Act of 1976 for a deduction equal to 100% of the basis plus 50% of the difference between the fair market value and the basis. ---- Equipment Needs: Computers and accessories Medical and dental equipment Agricultural machinery and tools Water testing and purification equipment Well drilling and construction machinery Scientific equipment Manufacturing and machine tools Sewing machines Telephone equipment Wheels and tires Typewriters Motors ---- Shipping and Travel: Contributions of perishable services such as air travel, shipping and accommodations allow us to stretch our resources and expand our services. ---- Cash Donations are Highly Leveraged: Our analysis indicates that the cost to acquire, ship and place equipment in operation will be only about one tenth of the fair market value of the equipment once in place. Put another way $1 in cash will create $10 in benefits. ---- International Organizations: To simplify operations Global Technology Foundation will enter into contracts with long established international, bilateral, and national organizations such as AID, OXFAM, Peace Corp, VITA, ATI and others. We will act as a resource and partner supplying needed equipment and training support to their local or foreign representatives. These cooperating organizations, with their intimate understanding of recipient needs and resources, will largely direct and supervise the transport, placement and use of equipment. ---- -- unsigned *Wayne_Mesard(); MESARD@BBN.COM BBN, Cambridge, MA
