[comp.protocols.nfs] PC NFS and efficiency.

tobbe@isy.liu.se (Torbjorn Kronander) (01/25/89)

We have developed a communications protocol above RPC from SUN.
The link is to be used from a large number of different systems, amongst
which are PCs. Our problem is that the PC/NFS toolkit from SUN has
limited buffersize to 1 kB. This makes throughput efficiency extremely
bad. A factor that in our case is critical since we transmit huge
amounts of data. I can for instance give an example of transmission of
256 kB. On a UNIX to UNIX link (4k buffers) this transmission takes
in the order of 1 to 2 seconds to complete, PC to UNIX is in the
order of 8 times slower (we are in this case forced to use 1k buffers) !

Does anybody know of methods to increase throughput in this case,
is there other RPC products than SUNs that is more efficient?
Has anybody another idea on how to circumvent the problem?
Why is SUN making such an unnecessary limitation in PC/NFS toolkit?
