Our department is considering dropping a few hundred K on a fileserver for a reasonable number of workstations used by faculty and graduate students. Perhaps as many as 50 workstations/400 users would be supported by this machine. We are currently laboring along with a small Sun and only 400 Meg of disk. The main contenders at the moment appear to be DEC, Sequent, and Epoch. We're looking to get something on the order of 5-10 Gig in disk. The DEC for example is an 18 Mip machine with 32 Meg of memory and 4.8 Gig of disk. The Sequent is comparable, just a bit slower and a little less memory and disk. I'm looking for people who have had experience with the Epoch file servers, especially those that are using the optical disk "jukebox" arrangement. Please send me any pros or cons from your experiences with your Epoch. Performance, ease of installation/maintenance, repair woes (if any), etc. Thanks in advance. -- Win Strickland Jr School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 Internet: win@gatech.edu root@gatech.edu postmaster@gatech.edu UUCP: ...!{decvax,hplabs,ncar,purdue,rutgers}!gatech!win Phone: 404 894 3086 (msgs 404 894 3152)
