I was playing a game of 3.7.1 rogue the other night and encountered a scroll that was new to me. I read it and it said "you hear a faint cry of anguish". I had no idea what it did, and I've never seen one before (I've played a LOT of rogue). Later in the same game, I got another one. I read it while a quasit was attacking me, and it may have cloned another quasit from the one next to me. Another one appeared, but it might have just walked up. Anyone know what this is ? Please post to net (brief response, please). Bill Dietrich houxj!wapd

You read a scroll of create monster. The first time, you were probably standing next to a wall and said monster was created inside said wall. Hence the scream of pain.

No question about it. It was a scroll of create monster. It did not clone a quasit from the one next to you; it just created a new one. It could have created a rust monster or a centaur just as easily. The reason there was a 'faint cry of anguish' when you read the first one was that it failed to create a monster.

The 'cry of anguish' occurs when a make monster scroll materializes a monster in a wall.

That was a create monster scroll. If you read it, it creates a currently-legal monster next to you. If there's no space next to you to put one, you will hear the faint cry of anguish.
