I am a novice in the world of Distributed File Systems, the following questions are probably selfevident however I need to know. I have been fed the information that when you run RFS you can move an existing application into the RFS environment and continue running it without need for modification of the code. The opposite has been stated about NFS. When I start to read documentation on NFS it states that NFS is implemented under the File System Switch and therefore it is transparent to the user wheter (s)he uses local filstore or remote. Are'nt these to statments contradictory ? Other info that I find seem to support the first statment above: It says, because of the stateful nature of RFS it supports "bizzare UNIX semantics" like the ability to open , remove and go on writing to a file. I also find that the stateless nature of NFS inhibit NFS to perform these "bizzare semantics", but that these functions are handled by the FSS. Does anyone have a gospel to clarify this ? --L.T. -- // ///// /// | Lars Tunkrans Distributed Resource Systems support. // /// /// | UUCP: {uunet,mcvax,munnari,cernvax,diku,inria,prlb2,tut /// /// /// | ,ukc, unido} !sunic!iclswe!lars Phone +46 (0)76096368 /// ///// /////// | ( Standard Disclaimer )
