[comp.protocols.nfs] laserprinting from PC-NFS

milne@ICS.UCI.EDU (Alastair Milne) (10/11/89)

I don't recall seeing this question addressed before.

   I am running PC-NFS 3.0 on 8 PC's (WD8003E cards) using one of our
department's Sun's as pcnfsd server, and as of today, its gateway to the
department's backbone. Although it's not critical, we'd like to be able to
use the printing feature in PC-NFS to run files on the fileserver off one
of the department's laser printers; but that doesn't seem to work.

Doing it by hand, we'd use imprint. What does NET PRINT use for it? Is
there a way of having it use imprint? Or is the problem more interesting
   than that?

   Thanks for any help,

Traditionally such problems have been resolved by judicious tweaking
of the server's /etc/printcap. Define a printer with an input filter that
does what you want, then mount this via NFSCONF and print to it.

If you have to, you can also fiddle with pcnfsd (that's why we ship it
in source form). Normally it submits each print job by spawning
an "lpr"; it would be trivial to change this so that (e.g.) if the
printer name was "imprint" it would spawn another program instead.

If you come up with any useful configurations or enhancements, don't
forget to post them to this group.
