[comp.protocols.nfs] ARP packets via SLIP with PC-NFS

GEustace@massey.ac.nz (Glen Eustace) (11/28/89)

We have started experimenting with SLIP. We are connecting PCs running
Sun PCNFS v3.0.1 to a Pyramid 9815 running OSx4.4.

We have been having a lot of difficulty getting the PC to talk to
anything else. After resorting to a Datacom Analyser, it would seem that
PCNFS is sending an ARP packet for each host to the Pyramid. Pyramid SLIP
Interface doesn't support ARP, consequently no connections can be made.
It was found that by using the command

	arp -s host 0:0:0:0:0:0

on the PC, we could trick the PC into thinking it already knew the
Ethernet address of the intended host. It didn't matter what address was
specified.

ARP on SLIP seems a bit non sensical anyway? Is it possible to tell
PCNFS that it shouldn't send the ARP request. What would it do with the
reply anyway?

When configured for SLIP, PC-NFS doesn't send ARP packets. The magic
incantation in "config.sys" is the "/x" switch on the PCNFS.SYS
line, which (1) says "don't ARP, just toss the packet down to the Link
Level Driver", (2) tweaks the NFS tsize (if you really want to run
NFS itself, rather than just TCP/IP apps), (3) adjusts all the timeouts,
and (4) turns off the license violation detection (think about it....).
If you set up SLIP using INSTALL or NFSCONF, this flag should be set.
If you hand-crafted it....
