Here is another proposed rogue enhancement. Define a monster class type merchant, only a few instances of which to appear in a game. Each merchant carries a bag containing scrolls, rings, etc (mostly, if not entirely, good stuff). Each of these items has a cost in pieces of gold, which varies from merchant to merchant, and item to item. When the rogue encounters a merchant, he may use his gold to buy a single item in the merchant's pack, but to do so he must first fight and conquer the merchant. In his dying gasp, the merchant displays to the rogue the items he carries and the cost of each. When the rogue has selected an item, the merchant dies, the remaining items in his sack disappear, the selected item is added to the rogue's pack, and the rogue's financial stature is appropriately revised.
