[net.games.rogue] Winning Rogue 5.2

cliff (04/01/83)

Greetings,

Having won rogue 5.2 for the second time within two weeks, I decided
to give up the game as "old hat." But what could be more fun than to spoil
it for those of you are bound to succumb to temptation and read these insider's
tips.

I. Giant ants: This nemesis can do you much harm by weakening you early
in the game. However, if you kill the first giant ant with
one blow, you will not be able to do that to the next 5
giant ants, conversly if you take more then one blow on
the first ant, the next 5 ants will die on the first hit
(even if you are bare handed!!)

II. Floating Eyes: Some scrolls when read before (ie. standing immediately
next to) Floating Eyes will yield surprising results, if
that scroll has not been identified. For instance once
I read a scroll next to an eye and received the message:
"All is crystal clear", and I never needed an identify
scroll for the rest of that game.

III. Rust Monsters: They will not damage leather armor. They dissapear at
Level 19, and can be scared away when you zap a wand
of light towards them (not always, so try it from a dis-
		      tance).

IV. Xorns: Luckily when you genocide Dragons, these go away also.

V. Umber Hulks: When you are confused, drink a potion of Confusion; it
reverses the effects. (Drink two in a row and you will
never be confused again). You never see Umber Hulks on
your way back up to Level 1.

VI. Purple Worms: If you wonder why they are sometimes stationary, and
sometimes they attack you, I'll clue you in: they are
attracted to the food in your pack. The less you have,
the less likely they are to attack (0 food = 0 attacks).

VII. Dragons: Genocide them first, and Xorns will disappear if you wait
until you are at or below level 17 before you read your
		genocide scroll.

Don't use all of these bizarre side effects in the same game or, just like
the wizard versions when you were a wizard, you won't be able to post your
score.

	For your information:
None of what Cliff said about winning 5.2 rogue
is even remotely true. Don't pay any attention,
you will just be doing silly things.
