Hello, I belong to the scientific staff of the "Leibniz-Rechenzentrum" (LRZ). The LRZ is a regional computer centre which provides the Bavarian universities with high performance and vector computing capacities. The LRZ owns a CRAY YMP 4/432, three CDC CYBER 995, workstations and PCs. I am a member of a newly established working group which has to study the implications of installing - high performance file servers for our mainframes (most probably it will be a NFS server), - high performance (UNIX) multiprocessor (super)computers and besides also - (NFS) file servers for workstation clusters and - high performance/RISC (graphic) workstations. Therefore, I am very interested in the following topics: - Experiences made with such systems. - Benchmarks for such systems (especially file servers) helping us to select the appropriate vendor. - Hints on other appropriate news groups (Pardon if the current group is not appropriate for these topics or they were discussed before). Our primary point of view is the operation of systems in a computer centre environment. Therefore, we are mainly dealing with the following problems: - Management of the systems. - Backup of the user data. - Security of the systems. - Administration of 6.000 to 10.000 users. - Charging and billing of computer resources. - Management of quotas. - etc. PLEASE send all comments by electronic mail to boetsch@lan.informatik.tu-muenchen.dbp.de or boetsch%lan.informatik.tu-muenchen.dbp.de @ {relay.cs.net, unido.uucp} to save bandwidth. I will compile a summary if there is sufficient interest. Thank You for Your cooperation.
