In response to your message of Mon Apr 4 10:34:59 1983: The figures I was given were that a normal mace does 2d4 and a long sword does 1d10; this means that your starting mace does 3-9 damage (average 6 +/- 1.63) while a random longsword does 1-10 damage (average 5.5 +/- 3.02). This matches my own experience, which is that a long sword is not worth the risk (if it had the same chance to hit, which I don't think it does, you'd still run about a 80% chance of being \worse/ off wielding a random long sword).
