AFS used to always fetch an entire file to the local disk. This strategy gives you low overhead and good throughput, generally a win. The downside is that everything comes to a halt when when a large file is getting fetched. Now they have partial fetching. IMHO, it's almost more trouble than it's worth. But if you're dealing with large files it helps quite a bit. More than that i don't know. For more information talk to someone at Transarc.
