In response to your message of Sat Apr 9 00:14:12 1983: Unless you are very careless about getting experience (e.g., don't leave level 12 below experience level 9 or level 16 without EL 10) a ring of regeneration is minimally useful against xorns because you heal almost that fast anyway. As far as I've found, the RoR gives you 1 HP per movement turn, while you get the following naturally: experience healing average level (HP/move) healing/move 1 1 / 19 .053 2 1 / 17 .059 3 1 / 15 .067 4 1 / 13 .077 5 1 / 11 .091 6 1 / 9 .111 7 1 / 7 .143 8 1 / 3 .333 9 1-2 / 3 .500 10 1-3 / 3 .667 11 1-4 / 3 .833 12 1-5 / 3 1.00 If you're at EL 10 in xorn country you could win small, but you give the xorn a free attack while you put on the ring (you won't survive for long if you wear the ring continuously unless you have a huge number of food rations). The ring wins big when you're at low EL's since it can not only helps you survive but can actually save you food if you're waiting to heal before descending.
