We have been trying to use Sun PC-NFS on a PS/2 Model 70 running DOS 3.3 with an Ungermann-Bass NICps/2 ethernet card. All attempts so far have failed, and we are interested in finding out if anyone else has succeeded in using PC-NFS with this card. We are also interested in suggestions of alternative software for DOS/Unix file sharing across an ethernet. Here are the details of our experiences: PC-NFS does not seem to be accessing the card correctly. The myeaddr program reports an incorrect ethernet address for the card. When nfsping is used it reports that our server does not respond, and netstat indicates that arp packets are sent out, but no packets are received. Running the SunOS etherfind packet-grabber indicates that nothing is reaching the network from the PC. This card was used successfully on the same machine when AIX 1.1 was the operating system rather than DOS. The card also passes the diagnostic tests provided by the manufacturer. Sun has informed us that they do not support the card, even though NIC is an option in the configuration program. Inclusion of NIC support in the software is apparently an error. We believe that the problem is that PC-NFS was not upgraded to support the micro-channel version of the NIC. We have investigated the possibility of using a Packet Driver, but we have not been able to find one for this card. Any help would be most appreciated. Please send to me at peterr@dgp.utoronto.ca / peterr@dgp.toronto.edu I'll post a summary of replies if there's interest expressed by mail. Peter Rowley
