[comp.protocols.nfs] The best ethernet boards for PCNFS

gavin@mit-caf.MIT.EDU (Gavin C. H. Zau) (09/24/90)

can anyone please enlighten me on which is the best
ethernet board for PCNFS (on 386 pcs)? Currently we use the
3c501 because it is cheap. Is there any advantages to the
more expensive ones eg 3c503??? Thanks.

The best advantage that I have found is in the configurability of the 3c503.

The 3c503 is software configurable (VECIE6.SYS line in config.sys) for
IRQ, DMA and Xcvt type. The only jumpers are for I/O address and Memory, but
I have never had to change the memory jumper (default is mem disable) and I
have only once had to change the I/O address from the default (300).

You might also look at the Western Digital cards (what ever the equivalent
to the 8003e is). They are as configurable and I have heard as much as
twice as fast as the 3Com ones. They also have a 16-bit card that works
with PC-NFS (in 8-bit mode now, w/ the next version of PC-NFS supporting
the 16-bit operation, I think). They are also significantly cheaper (in
our experience).
