I have run into some problems recently trying to get PC-NFS to work with PCs containing 3COM 3C503 Ethernet adapters. The problem only occurs when trying to boot with a floppy (rather than a hard drive), with a 3C503, in a PC-class machine (works in 80286 or greater). Basically, what happens is this: The PC boots, device drivers start up OK (pcnfs.sys, vecie6.sys, etc.). As soon as NET START RDR is run, problems start. Depending on what machine is running, I get "Data Error Reading Drive", or the system hangs up. If I copy the SAME stuff to a hard drive-equipped machine (and change everything to look on the hard drive rather than the floppy), it works. This has been tried on a number of machines (AT&T 6300, Commodore PC-10 and PC-10-II, and Sanyo MBC-880), with a number of DOS versions (3.1, 3.2, 3.3) with the same results. Grasping at straws, I tried to create a RAM drive at boot time, and copy everything to the RAM drive, and run it from there. This worked, except that occasional errors would then occur trying to read a file on the floppy. Unfortunately, this doesn't leave much memory. Sun technical support has been contacted about this. They have been helpful, but haven't been able to find a solution (yet). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. These machines are located in student laboratories, and are needed very badly.
