[comp.protocols.nfs] Using PCNFS with QEMM.

blu@millipore.com (Brian Utterback) (10/30/90)

We are trying to use PCNFS with QEMM and have had limited success. As per
instructions from SUN, we only tried to relocate the files that we were
told to and that worked. The only problem is PCNFS.SYS would not fit into
any of the regions that QEMM found. This machine has 4MB of extended memory
and 4MB of expanded memory. Is there any way to get PCNFS.SYS to live in
either extended or expanded memory?
If you are using PCNFS with a dos extender, could you send me your
configuration?

Huh? I thought that by definition expanded memory was memory beyond 640K
but below the 1meg mark. Usually the culprit for causing smaller chunks
of high memory is disk controllers with ROMs at c800:0000. My configuration
has a disk controller with ROM off somewhere else. Sometimes QEMM doesn't
see the ST01 BIOS and chokes because of that (it's at c800:000). Run MFT
and look at the 'First Meg' option. You may have to change hardware
configuration to make large TSR's fit and/or specify the region. I have
Banyan's 153K TSR loaded just fine. Hope when we switch to PC-NFS that I
can get it to fit. How large is it?

QEMM only puts drivers into High RAM (memory between 640K and 1MB not being
used by video, page frame, and ROMs). QEMM does not load drivers into
expanded memory or extended memory (you should have Sun or whoever is doing
PC-NFS to write drivers that can be loaded mostly in expanded or extended
memory, Novell shell drivers exist that do this, rather than 40k low, its
7k low and 33k in expanded or extended memory).

A few things that can help put drivers up high is to make sure that QEMM
comes before any drivers that you would like to put up high. Also, trying
to play with the addresses of cards that need to put ROMs in that High RAM
area would be a good idea, like setting the network cards to start at c800
and forcing the EMS page frame to go from e000 to efff. Also, if you think you
have mappable areas in that high RAM area, as per manual, you should add
the INCLUDE parameter on the QEMM line (along with the RAM parameter to
use that high RAM area for drivers that are normally loaded low).

Hope this helps,
Bob
