[comp.protocols.nfs] Wollongong's Mac NFS -- First Impressions

hhg1@GTE.COM (Hallett German) (11/28/90)

I have to say that I was disappointed. It can do the job but has some
serious limitations for my purpose.

Features:
* Access NFS servers from the Mac
* LPR print server
* SNMP Agent
* Uses MacTCP
* Includes Net Text and NFS Mounter
* And some more

Pluses:
Install not too bad.
Documentation Adequate
SNMP Agent
LPR
Net Text to read text from to match the appropriate OS

Minuses:
No ftp/telnet - separate product
The client is SINGLE User so two people can't mount the same directory.
Says it supports PCNFSD but only has documentation for their own daemon
NFSAD.
"With WIN/NFS for VMS 1.4 files stored on VAX/VMS systems will not be
rewritten correctly after being modified by Macintosh users." It also
appears incompatible with PC-NFS in that I use the DOS copy command
on a text file. I can see it on the Mac but I can't use NET TEXT with
it. The file has no type or creator.

I will give Wollongong a call to make sure I'm doing things right
but I plan to send it back.

I'm willing to look at the other NFS product. If it:
will allow Mac's and PCs to share together in a volume maintained by
WIN/NFS for VMS. (PC running SUN's PC-NFS 3.01a) Does anyone know
if it does and please send me the phone number.

I hope the 1.1 release comes out soon because "early adapters" will
have to tolerate the product's initial shortcoming for a while
