For various reasons, I much prefer to run BIND for my DNS rather than YP. As a result, PC-NFS has YP turned off and therefore, PC-NFS users look like having to maintain a \nfs\hosts file with hostname/IP-address mappings so that "telnet" and "ftp" etc will work. This is very messy though... Is there any built-in way to get PC-NFS to consult DNS rather than YP on the server, or do I have to take to rpc.pcnfsd.c or something? /\ndy -- Andrew M. I don't believe it is possible to use a DNS rather than YP. We have YP off and found that a convenient way for all our local hosts was to ensure that all our PC have NFSDRIVE set to P:, our public drive. The hosts file in P:\NFS\HOSTS has all our local hosts and the more common non-local ones. This file is updated every night. In our experience this scheme has worked OK. It can but currently isn't be augmented by a 'rsh server nslookup' command for the uncommon hosts. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Glen Eustace, Software Manager, Computer Centre, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. I have been using the YP with fallback to DNS for my net. Sun's ypserv can be made to use the DNS when ever a host can't be found in the YP database. All it takes is a little mod to the /var/yp/Makefile. So, what I do is keep a small host file and all is well. I have heard rumors that this is a bad combo on really loaded nets, but I have not seen any problems with using this scheme as of today. I have been running like this for a year now. chuck smoko csmoko@relay.nswc.nay.mil
