(See article 358ish.) You were held by a fungus after you descended? Well, just be glad that monsters don't follow you down the stairs as a matter of course. That would be more "real-life-like" (map the definition as you see fit), and a more difficult programming task, and it would make life in the dungeon shorter and not sweeter.
