[comp.protocols.nfs] PC/TCP tn 3270 speed

perl@pbseps.PacBell.COM (Richard Perlman) (04/19/91)

We just installed PC/TCP on an IBM-XT and fired up tn in 3278
emulation mode. Performance was slow, (compared to tn3270
on a Mac SE) and seemed to spend a lot of time waiting for
turn-around.

We are connected to the host by a routed 56kbs link to another
LAN and then through another bridged 56kbs circuit. I have no
absolute expectation of performance, but I would think a
character based PC display would be at least as fast as a bit
mapped Mac on the same network (actually connected by a FastPath
to the network - another slowdown).

I adjusted the TCP window size to various values and increased
buffers to 7... but no real improvement. Line mode to the same
VM host seems to run at reasonable speeds.

Ideas??

BTW, I am also considering Sun's "Advanced Telnet", I'd like to
hear about any experience people may have had with it.

Always remember that you are here having already understood the necessity of
contending only with yourself. Thank everyone who affords you the opportunity.
