[comp.protocols.nfs] Beame & Whiteside: fax number wanted

schlebbe@azu.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de (Heribert Schlebbe) (04/24/91)

We heard that the NFS software of Beame & Whiteside (BW-NFS) seems to be cheaper
than the PC-NFS product of Sun Microsystems. In particular, B&W apparently
provides better license agreements for universities than Sun Microsystems does
(single license only for PC-NFS).

Can anybody mail us the Fax number of Beame & Whiteside or of a vendor of
BW-NFS?

Thanks in advance Heribert Schlebbe

I realize University prices for the original copies of PCNFS are not cheap,
but updates are peanuts. We updated our whole campus to 3.5 for $140.

A word of caution; beware of PCNFS 3.5 and Windows 3.0 with a 3C501...
This is a very buggy combination.

I just ordered the update for BEAME & WHITESIDE for our entire lab. $20 (plus
shipping). The new version INCLUDES a WINDOWS 3.0 NETWORK DRIVER!!
Site licenses are available and ARE NOT SERIALIZED. I have ONE DISK that
INSTALLS NFS on ANY MACHINE. If someone screws up a machine. I or a technician
simply boot this disk and it does the rest. (Even sets the correct IP address
automatically!). With PC-NFS I would have to have to have a different
install disk for every machine. YUK! Trying to maintain all of that would
be a nightmare. The people I talk to who use PC-NFS aren't using it in a
student lab OPEN 24 HOURS a day to anyone that walks in. People screw up
machines at least several times a week usually trying to install their
own software (everybody has their favorite WP) or trying to defeat security.
Also B&W has better security. With PC-NFS a DOS user (ANY USER!) can go anywhere
on the net. B&W allows me to control which NFS servers may be mounted. Example:
wuarchive may be mounted anonymously. We don't want the DOS machines to mount
it because of the increased traffic (in the lab and net).

BTW their phone and fax number is (416)648-6556
