[comp.protocols.nfs] Foregoing Sun PC-NFS 3.5's prt?

ado@elsie.nci.nih.gov (Arthur David Olson) (05/13/91)

If you have experience with omitting the "prt *" command when running
PC-NFS 3.5, I'd appreciate hearing from you by electronic mail. We're
looking at doing this for folks who do not want PC-NFS's printing
facilities but do want other PC-NFS features; the goal is to save
some memory and avoid Alt-P fiascos. Are there any pitfalls?

In order to resolve a number of Windows-related issues, it was necessary
to make PRT and PCNFS.SYS more tightly coupled in 3.5. In addition,
there were some changes to PRT to avoid conflicts with the print
server. The upshot of all this is that PRT is _NOT_ optional, and PC-NFS
will fail to install its redirector if it finds that PRT is absent.

As for the Alt-P "fiasco": yes, that was a stupid bug to introduce.
We'll try to resolve it as quickly as possible. I'm thinking about
a slightly more significant change, where we get rid of the INT 9
intercept altogether and just key off shift state in the timer.
This should work even with Windows running. How does a printer
hotkey of <Ctrl>+<LeftShift>+<RightShift> sound? Or just <Alt>+<RightShift>
