[comp.protocols.nfs] Please help me set up PC-NFS with packet drivers

rg@msel.unh.edu (Roger Gonzalez) (05/16/91)

I have a NE2000 ethernet board in an AT. I've been running the packet
driver from Clarkson with NET and Clarkson's version of NCSA telnet/ftp.
I've got a pretty box from Sun containing PC-NFS 3.5, and I know that
it doesn't directly support the packet drivers. I know that using some
combination of extra drivers, you can fool it into working. I seem to
keep catching the tail end of discussions on this subject, but have never
seen the answer. Since it is a FAQ, please email me.

Exactly what steps (what extra drivers, ftp from where, etc.) do I need
to take to get this setup running?

Can I still use the NCSA telnet and ftp at the same time as PC-NFS, or
do I need to use the programs supplied with PC-NFS?

Thanks,
Roger

There is the same problem with NCSA-Telnet2.3b15 / CUT-CP and PC-NFS 3.01!

Who can help?

My only experience in this area relates to the use of a 3com Etherlink II
card, so the following may or may not be useful.

The short answer to the question of NCSA vs PC-NFS is to upgrade to PC-NFS 3.5,
grab pktd.sys from the end of this article, then change your config.sys so that the only "nfs" commands are

(config.sys)	device=c:\nfs\pcnfs.sys
		device=c:\nfs\sockdrv.sys
		device=c:\nfs\pktd.sys
and your

(autoexec.bat)	set SERVER=aegir
		set PRINTER=lw1
		set CONFIGTEL=c:\ncsa\config.tel

		set TZ=0
		set NFSDRIVE=C
		c:\ncsa\3c503.com 0x69 2 0x280 0 *** your card specific driver
c:\ncsa\pktint.com *** if you want to run Win3.0
		prt *
		nfsrun

If you are using another card e.g. wd8003 etc. then the following paragraph
does not apply.

The only way that I found to run PC-NFS 3.0.1 and NCSA Telnet using the 3c503
card, was to have separate config.sys and autoexec.bat for NCSA and PC-NFS.
The 3c503 card has a jumper area to allow its on-board memory to be disabled
for PC-NFS 3.0.1, or enabled for NCSA. Switching between the two card setups
had to be accompanied by loading the correct config.sys and autoexec.bat,
followed by a HARDWARE reset.

Best of luck!
Peter.

Here's the PKTD.SYS which corresponds to PC-NFS 3.5. It will ONLY work
with PC-NFS 3.5; the old PKTD.SYS will work with any release. Why use
the new one, then? It includes the hooks for the SNMP agent in 3.5,
and supports 16 sockets. Before you get carried away, you should note
that (until you hear different) only 3.5 apps (and LifeLine 2.0) will
use the extra 8. It's still useful, however, because they will thereby
leave the lower 8 free for old toolkit apps.

To recap the usage of this driver:

(1) Unpack it and stick it in C:\NFS
(2) Configure PC-NFS, select Other for your adapter, and
    type in the line

	DEVICE=C:\NFS\PKTD.SYS

(3) Before rebooting, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and insert
a line to start your chosen packet driver BEFORE you
start PC-NFS with NFSRUN. For example, to run PC-NFS
over a Novell NE1000, the only way* I know to do it
is to get the NE1000 driver from the Clarkson collection
    and add the line

	NE1000 0x60 0x3 0x300

(or however your board is configured).

I'm not supplying the source for it at this time, but I
will do so if I get requests. Note also that this is still
Ethernet-specific. Anyone want to to a PPP version :-)

Russ: d'you want to put this in sun.soe.clarkson.edu for FTP?
Thanks.

Enjoy,

Geoff

* because as far as I can tell the NE1000 NDIS driver on
Compuserve is broken :-( or should that be :-)
