[net.games.rogue] Rogue and D&D

fdf@houxa.UUCP (09/01/83)

I would like to know if the resemblance between Rogue and
Dungeons and Dragons is merely superficial or if it's deeper.
Obviously, the concepts of hit points, armor class, and
experience levels are the same, and many (all?) of the monsters
occur in both games. However, are weapons the same? That is,
does a mace in rogue do the same damage (1d6, I think) as a
mace in D&D? Do monsters have the same number of hit dice
in the two games? These questions come to mind since
in my current game, I have both a +2,+4 mace and a two handed
sword. If they were D&D weapons, I believe I could readily
determine which one is better; however, in rogue I don't
know. (The mace also brings up the question of what exactly
+2,+4 means: +2 levels to hit and +4 points of damage)?

If this type of information is supposed to be "secret", I
apologize for asking, and this submission should be ignored.
(If this is the case, I'm surprised that weapons are given
+1,+1 and the like, because that information doesn't seem
to valuable in comparing anything but two weapons of the
same type unless something is known about the power of the
weapons).

Answers, if any, may be mailed to me. Thanx.

I have just been "looking" in old news files(without success) for that same

information. If there is some kind person (ken or glenn??) with this kind

of info, I would also like a copy of the mail file.

I have always been very troubled as to whether I should use my 'X' scrolls

of enchant wpn on my long sword's/mases or wait for the two-handed sword that

just doesn't seem to appear very often in my games.

                                 thanx in advance,
