"Repurposing a Videodisc to Create an Interactive Video Program for a German
Language/Culture Class"

In a world which is becoming ever smaller, foreign language teachers are
searching for new strategies to help their students develop communicative
competence in a foreign language and attain "linguistic proficiency within a
cultural context" other than their own. A well-conceived interactive video
program can help instructors attain these pedagogical goals.

This presentation will look at the specifics of teaching a German
conversation/composition class using an interactive video program created with
a repurposed videodisc. The advantages and disadvantages of using
commercially available videodiscs will be discussed, and concerns such as
hardware costs and availability/adaptability of software will also be
addressed in the context of the presenter's ongoing interactive video
projects.

"Art or Forgery? The Strange Case of Han Van Meegeren"

In May, 1945, just after the end of the war in Europe, Allied forces
discovered a previously unknown painting by the 17th century Dutch master
Vermeer in the collection of Nazi Hermann Goering. They traced the sale of
"Christ and the Adulteress" to a third-rate Dutch painter, Han Van Meegeren,
who they then arrested for collaboration with the enemy. After weeks of
silence, Van Meegeren suddenly claimed to have painted the work himself. The
penalty for collaboration was a long prison term, perhaps even life, but
forgery carried a maximum penalty of only four years in prison. Was Van
Meegeren telling the trust? Did he paint "Christ and the Adulteress" or was
he lying to escape the penalty for treason?

The Center for the Design of Educational Computing at Carnegie Mellon
University has developed an interactive videodisc program based on the true
story of Han Van Meegeren. The program is designed to offer several different
kinds of access to the case by providing students with both visual and textual
resources. Through the use of structured modules and unlimited access to the
resources, students are introduced to a variety of important art historical,
critical, and philosophical issues concerning the attribution, evaluation, and
understanding of works of art.

In this session, I will use the videodisc program to introduce the case of Han
Van Meegeren and show some of the resources which the program offers. I will
also talk about the development of the project and some of the choices we
made. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion about aspects
of this project which are of particular interest to the audience.

"Multimedia in Biomedical Education"

Demonstrations and discussion of various Macintosh-based multimedia projects
developed by the authors for use in teaching medicine and biology,
concentrating on the "nuts-and-bolts" aspects of developing interactive
videodisk programs in HyperCard and SuperCard.

"Toolbook"

Toolbook is a HyperCard system for IBM personal computers. It is an
electronic publishing media with hypernavigation to link and layer text,
drawings, graphics and color.

"An Introduction to MacroMind Director"

Jeff Cummings will present an overview of MacroMind Director 2.0, the leading
multimedia presentation and animation tool for the Apple MacIntosh.

Director's graphics, animation, text and sound capabilities enable visual
communicators to create: Multimedia presentations, visualizations, courseware
and desktop video productsion. You'll see several examples and take a brief
look at how to create a Director "movie."

Jeff Cummings is an interactive designer at Iconcepts, a multimedia production
house in Cambridge, MA. He is an authorized MacroMind Developer with an M.A.
