I've been playing rogue for 3 years and have been a total winner twice (ver. 3.9).... BIG DEAL.... Anyway, I was hoping someone could tell me how to use a ring of teleportation. I've encountered numerous cursed rings of teleportation and they've proved to be a royal pain. But, when I am lucky enough to find an uncursed ring, I can't figure the darn thing out, it never works. How can I control such a ring, or is it what I think... worthless. -- Mark Dominick ...!ihima!mbd

The ring of telportation is far from useless, but you need plenty of food, and a one-track mind, to use it a lot. To make it useful, use a scroll of Remove Curse on it; then you can take it on and off as you like. In Rogue 3.6, there are clever dragons that wait for you to go into a blind alley and then block your way. (They don't attack you, they just block your only exit...) If you are not in the mood to fight a dragon with noplace to run, put on your ring, "wait" 5 to 50 times, and you will be someplace else. The same technique can be used to get around a leprechaun or nymph blocking a doorway, if there is no good way to attack them. If you are fleeing from a monster that is beating you, put on the ring, keep fleeing, and hope for the best... If you are in Umber hulk territory and don't feel strong enough to handle them, you can try adventuring with the ring on all the time. You get a chance of escaping any fight when you are weak (except, it seems, never when you really want too). This technique doesn't work too well, though, because it takes more time to explore the level, and meanwhile more monsters are created. - Keremath, care of: Robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1 or: allegra!eosp1

Some additions to Robison's comments on the ring of teleportation:
1. In the versions of rogue I have played (3.6 and 5.2) the ring can
never be made to teleport at will; as Robison implied, the teleport
occurs at random times (1/20 chance of it happening on a given turn
in 5.2, as I recall). In these versions, it is *always* cursed, and
the curse must be removed with a remove curse scroll so you can take
it off when you want to stop teleporting.
2. It can be very useful in getting around trap-laden levels; how many
times have you found the only entrance to a treasure room blocked
by a trapdoor or starved on a level that had a teleport trap thus:
-----
|...|
#####+^.%|

3. Winning is everything; gold is nothing (you can always get more by
going up and down repeatedly through levels 7-14 on the way up to
kill leprechauns if you want more gold). Therefore, never leave a
leprechaun standing; just walk up and attack (save arrows for numphs).
Even if your gold is stolen, you get whatever the leprechaun might have
been standing on, and it might be that two handed sword or slow monster
staff you need to win.
