You don't say how many games of rogue you have played, or what version. Rogue can be won without cheating! It takes Luck, persistence, but above all, skill. You must develop a feeling for how to use the magic items. Some of them should be used at the first opportunity, others should be carefully hoarded for the lower levels of the dungeon. You must develop a feel for the fighting abilities of every monster, so that you can assess your abilities to fight them, given your current experience level, hit points, weapon and armor. You must develop a feel for the rate of monster creation, so that you instinctively know when you have adventured too slowly on any level, and are at risk of gang attacks. One mistake that stymies many players is going down into the dungeon too fast.
